This means:

  • We encourage all patients to let us know if they have ever served in the UK Armed Forces so that we can best support their care needs.
  • We are committed to learning from our patients and their families in order to improve quality of care.

Our Armed Forces offer

We recognise that Reservists and Veterans are well motivated, self-disciplined as well as skilled in communication, teamwork and leadership – all qualities valued by our organisation, and the NHS more broadly. We encourage all those with affiliations with the Armed Forces, to make an application to join our teams!

Here are some of the things you can expect from us, in your recruitment and career at the NCA:

The Trust is committed to removing barriers to employment and increasing diversity to reflect our local communities. We welcome applications from anybody with the relevant qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience, and provide guaranteed interviews to those who meet all essential criteria on our vacancies.

We are delighted to uphold a positive stance for employees who are Veterans, Reservists and Cadet Force Adult volunteers, as well as spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces. We have a number of policies and initiatives in place designed to support continuous service, while making transition from service personnel to NHS employee as smooth as possible. These include: being flexible with regards to training and mobilisation of all reservists and veterans, providing support for service personnel issues.

The Defence Discount Card is accepted at our restaurants across all NCA sites, giving a 20% discount on purchases. The Defence Discount Service is home of the Defence Privilege Card, a vetted discount card that can be used in stores, restaurants and venues. The card gives veterans and the armed forces community, including reservists and spouses/partners of serving personnel, military discounts.

During Armed Forces week the Trust hosts flag raising ceremonies on each of the four main hospital sites. Attended by local veterans and reservist units, members of the public and Trust staff, the event is just one way we show our support for those who make up the Armed Forces community. Our local Reserve Unit is 206 MMR.

We have developed an online training package for all our clinical staff training them in terms of prompting the ask if patients or family members have served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. This is supported by posters in clinical and public areas displaying our seven point plan which highlight our commitment and the organisations our staff can signpost or refer veterans and their families to.
